as a first-time mom, there were a lot of things to decide on before Shay arrived. while I’ve changed my fair share of diapers as the oldest of five, I’d never actually purchased them myself. we ended up trying five different kinds of diapers within the first month or so, and here are my thoughts + opinions on each, as well as my winner at the end!

01 / Pampers Swaddlers:
pros:
+ will say out of all of the diapers these fit the best the first few weeks as the natural brands tend to run a little bit bigger.
+ you’ll probably get a bunch for free if you’re delivering in the hospital
+ extremely accessible

cons:
+ I’m personally not a fan of the ingredients— including Petrolatum (petroleum jelly), which is restricted in the EU due to studies showing skin contact over extended periods of time is associated with cancer & is known to cause skin redness, tenderness, swelling, and itching.
💰 cost: $27.99 for 84 = 0.33 per diaper

02 / Coterie — use code LOALBO20 for 20% off your first order
pros:
+ come on subscription so you don’t have to think about it, easy text service to delay, change sizes, order more, etc.,
+ definitely stay dry the longest of any other diapers we’ve used
+ newborn pack comes with half newborn & half size 1 so you can get the fit right
+ super clean ingredients
+ because they stay dry longer, they’ve definitely helped us get better sleep and use fewer diapers altogether
+ Available at Whole Foods

cons:
+ we experienced a lot of leaks the first week until I realized they were just too small. Coterie‘s newborn diapers say they are for less than 10 pounds, but they definitely run smaller than other brands
+ they’re pretty pricey in regards to diapers
+ only certain sizes are available at Whole Foods! I’ve only ever seen sizes 3-5 at our local stores.

cost: $94.50 for 198 diapers or $85 on a recurring subscription = $0.47 or $0.43 + free shipping
(# of diapers per box also changes depending on the size)

03 / Millie Moon:
pros:
+ you can get them at target
+ really affordable, especially for a “luxury“ diaper
+ really clean ingredients, no fragrance or lotions

cons:
+ they run massive! The size one package says it’s four baby 6- 11 pounds, but at 8 1/2 pounds they are still big on ours.
+ definitely not as absorbent as Coterie

cost: $24.99 for 108 diapers = 0.23 each
*side note about Millie Moon, we really like their wipes!

04 / Dyper
pro:
+ these are the most sustainable of the bunch
+ they offer a 10% military discount
+ convenient & accessible – available through Grove Collaborative, Thrive Market, and Amazon.

very middle of the road, nothing horrible but nothing extremely impressive just a very average diaper to me!

cons:
+ they run big- not as big as Millie Moon, but definitely still a bit big.
+ only available in small packs unless you buy through their website
+ definitely on the higher end of the price range

cost: $89 for 218 = $0.41 each — free shipping like Coterie, but no discount for subscription

05 / The Honest Company
pros:
+ Super accessible — available at Target, Amazon & Walmart, as well as through their own subscription service. but with their subscription, you have to get their wipes too, which makes the bundle more expensive.

they seem to advertise their prints as a pro, but I don’t really care what a diaper looks like it’s more what it does so I don’t give any extra points for patterns.

cons: i’d say they run true to size but we had a lot of leak issues

cost: 103.73 for 245 (size 1) subscriptions + wipes = 0.42 each
$27.99 for 80 size 1 in store = $0.35

Here’s an overall, very quick run down between brands —
pampers swaddlers:
🥇fit
🥴 ingredients

coterie:
🥇absorbency, dryness, cleanest ingredients & text order adjustment
🥴 price tag & run small

millie moon:
🥇budget friendly
🥴 run HUGE

dyper:
🥇sustainability
🥴 price tag & kinda just mediocre imo

honest:
🥇 clean ingredients, (and patterns if you’re into that sort of thing)
🥴 lots of leaks

Our Winner: Coterie — use code LOALBO20 for 20% off your first order
While, at face value, Coterie is the most expensive, we have been so happy with their quality. We have had fewer leaks (when in the correct size!), long stretches of sleep without needing diaper changes, and overall we are using fewer diapers than with any other brand- which makes the higher ticket diapers last a lot longer. As a mom juggling all the things, including working full time, I am so grateful for Coterie’s doorstep delivery & easy text feature to adjust my delivery. Overall, it’s been a huge win for us!
